Brocken spectre: an optical phenomenon that occurs when a person stands, in a place of prominence, between direct sunshine and a fog of water particles. Their shadow appears to be enormous because it is visible on a ‘cloud’– in actuality, the projection screen is simply closer than expected; the shadow is not magnified. Light refracting around the silhouette creates a series of hooped rainbows.
